Day 15 – Scary Movie Month – Prince of Darkness

This is the second movie in John Carpenter’s ‘Apocalypse Trilogy’. I love this movie, but it also confuses the hell out of me (Pun intended?) There is so much scientific and theological debate that is either way above my head or is just made up nonsense.

It has the creeping fear of ‘The Thing’ but instead of aliens we are being hunted by the demonic (Although Jesus was an alien so the extraterrestrial aspect still applies). There is a lot of casual sexism that wasn’t in ‘The Thing’ (When everyone is presenting as the same gender sexism isn’t as pronounced?).

The use of the homeless population around the church is menacing. I enjoyed seeing Alice Cooper as one of the street people (Murder by stabbing someone with a bike is memorable!).

Seeing Victor Wong, Donald Pleasance, and Dennis Dun is a joy. It is hard to judge the acting as the possessed are weirdly wooded, but it seems to be a deliberate choice. So much of this is over top, but the rebirth of an alien Satan warrants a little excess.

A good time, but it just feels like there is something missing (whether that is in the film or in my head…)
